How the Outliner Subscribers page works

Once you've been using the Instant Outliner with a group of other people, one of the first things you'll probably want to know is who's reading your outline. The Outliner Subscribers page is how you find out.

Open the page

To open the page, choose My Subscribers from the Outliner sub-menu of the Radio menu, or click this link.

In the page, you'll see a list of all of the people who are subscribed to your outline, with a checkbox next to each name. If you're subscribed to their outline, then the box will be checked. If not, then the box will be un-checked. (screenshot)

To subscribe to someone's outline, check the box next to their name, and click the Subscribe button. You can also unsubscribe -- any unchecked outlines are unsubscribed when you click the button.

In addition, each person's name is a link to their weblog, and the little orange XML button is a link to the OPML version of their outline.

How it works

The Outliner Subscribers takes advantage of Raido Community Server's publish-and-subscribe feature.

When someone subscribes to your outline, their copy of Radio sends a message to RCS asking for notification whenever your outline changes. This message is re-sent every 24 hours, in order to keep their notification request current.

The Outliner Subscribers page gets the subscriber list directly from the server, via an XML-RPC request. The server returns a list of all the people who have sent a notification request within the last 24 hours.

What this means is that the Outliner Subscribers page will list all of the people who are currently subscribed to your outline, and have been online within the last 24 hours.

Caveats

RCS will only make three attempts to send notification to your subscribers when your outline changes. After a third error, the notification record is deleted from the server.

What this means is that people who are behind a firewall or NAT, and who can't be reached by RCS, will not appear on the Outliner Subscribers page, or if they do appear, their names will only stay in the list for a short time.

The same holds true for people who have a dynamically assigned IP address, whose address changes, as well as for people who disconnect from the Internet or turn off their computers.

If you want to maximize your presence on others' Outliner Subscribers pages, make sure that your computer is reachable as often as possible.
