IM Notification for Radio's Instant Outliner

Radio UserLand now sends and receives notification of changed outlines over the AIM and Jabber instant messaging services. Instead of polling, when you update your outline, Radio sends a message to each of the people who have subscribed to your outline.

It's fast because IM is designed to be fast, and it works behind firewalls. Since Radio no longer needs to poll for changes, it saves bandwidth too.

Requirements

You need either an AIM or Jabber account which you can dedicate to your copy of Radio.

You can get a new AIM account here. Jabber account availability varies from server to server. You can create a new Jabber account on Jabber.com using most Jabber clients.

Note for previous users

If you'd used the Instant Outliner in its last incarnation which polled outlines for changes, you may already be subscribed to some outlines. These subscriptions will never update, since they don't have the IM information needed to request update notification.

Before following the instructions below, you should unsubscribe from these outlines. If there are a lot of them, you can unsubscribe from them all at once, using the Unsubscribe All command in the Outliner sub-menu of the Radio menu.

How to

1. Update Radio.root.

2. Open the IM Notification prefs page.

3. Check the box to enable change notification via IM, and enter your IM information: If you use AIM, enter your AIM screen name and password; if you use Jabber, enter your Jabber account information.

(If you use both AIM and Jabber, fill in your account information for each.)

4. Check the box to enable notification for whichever service(s) you use.

5. Click the Submit button.

Radio is now configured to send and receive outline change notification via instant messaging.

OPML Coffee Mug

The OPML Coffee Mug is the gateway people use to subscribe to your outline. When someone running Radio clicks on the OPML Coffee Mug, their copy of Radio subscribes to your outline in Radio's Instant Outliner.

With IM notification is enabled, your OPML Coffee Mug includes your IM information in its link, so when people use it to subscribe to your outline, their copy of Radio will ask yours to notify them when your outline changes.

If you haven't already done so, you should add an OPML Coffee Mug to your weblog. This page explains how.

How to test

Here's how to make sure everything is working once you've configured IM notification above, and added the OPML Coffee Mug to your weblog:

1. Make sure that your outline has been saved:

In the Radio application, choose My Outline from the Outliner sub-menu of the Radio menu to open your outline, type some text, and choose Save from the File menu.

2. Subscribe to your own outline:

Go to your public home page, and click your OPML Coffee Mug. When Radio comes to the front and asks if you want to subscribe to the outline, click the OK button.

3. Open your Buddy list:

Choose the Buddy List command in the Outliner sub-menu of the Radio menu.

3. Make a change to your outline, and Save it. After a few seconds -- right after your outline is upstreamed, your name should change from plain text to boldface text, in your Buddies window.

4. Expand your outline in the Buddies window. You should see the new text that was added in step #3.
