Slides editing with Radio

Overview

Slides are presentation-style documents designed to be read sequentially. They're an outline of major points covering a specific subject.

They may be used in conjunction with a live presentation. But, on the Web, they don't have to be.

Here's a slideshow about slides in Manila.

What are slides?

A set of slides is an outline document stored in a Manila discussion group message.

You can view slides in a Web browser using Manila's slides displayer.

An example

On this site, message #4306 contains an outline document.

You can view it as a collection of slides through the following URL:

http://radiodiscuss.userland.com/slides/4306

How to browse

By default, slides have Prev, Next, and Home links in the upper right corner. (You'll see later that it's configurable.)

To go to the next slide, click the Next link. To go backwards, click the Prev link. To go to the first slide, click the Home link.

Slides wrap around. If you're at the end, and you click Next, you'll go to the first slide.

You can find out where you are by looking under the links. You'll see a message like Slide 2 of 3.

How to create slides

Be sure your Manila site knows you're using an outliner. Follow the instructions on this page.

Create a discussion group message, then click the Edit With Radio button to open the document in Radio UserLand.

Enter an outline that specifies your set of slides. Each top-level headline is a separate page, a separate slide.

Choose Save from the File menu to save the outline to your Manila site.

HTML markup, macros, shortcuts

You can include HTML, macros, and shortcuts in your slides. They work the same way they work elsewhere in Manila.

How to edit slides

If you have editorial permission for the message containing the slides outline, you'll see an Edit With Radio button beneath the slide.

Click the button to edit the slides in an outline in Radio UserLand.

Configuring slides

Every Manila site has an Outlines prefs panel accessible through the Editors Only menu.

In the Slides section, you can change the strings that are used to indent and outdent headlines in a slide.

You can also edit the slides template. The normal template macros may be used.

In addition, there are macros specific to slides: {slideTitle} displays the title of the slide. {slideBody} displays the text of the slide. {slideNum} displays the number of the current slide. {ctSlides} displays the number of slides in this collection.

{homeUrl} is replaced with the URL of the first slide. {prevUrl} is replaced with the URL of the previous slide. {nextUrl} is replaced with the URL of the next slide.

Click the Edit With Radio button to edit the template in an outline in Radio UserLand.
