Tutorial: RSS in Radio UserLand

First, I started with the list of RSS channels at Moreover.Com.

I found a few music-oriented channels. For each, I opened the file by choosing the Open URL command in the Radio UserLand File menu. (Screen shot.)

Then I opened created a new outline, choosing the New command from the File menu, and copied and pasted the top-level headlines of each of the Moreover channels. (Screen shot.)

Each top-level headline has a nodetype that indicates that it's an RSS channel and also contains the URL of the channel. (Screen shot.)

Then I saved the file into my www folder, making it accessible over the Web.

And because I have upstreaming turned on, the file was transferred to my folder on OurFavoriteSongs.Com.

Now, switch over to user mode (only in my mind, there is no such mode in the software) and choose the View All Users command from the Users sub-menu of the Radio menu. A window opens. I find my name in the list and double-click on the headline to expand it. There's musicNews.xml. (Screen shot.)

Each time I expand a RSS channel, it calls the Moreover server, gets the latest stories and shows them to me indented under the channel's headline in the outline. Each story also contains hidden information, the URL of the story. I double-click and they redirect to the article, which is then displayed, using the Microsoft HTML control that's baked into the Windows version of Radio UserLand. (Screen shot.)

Now, if you're an XML person, you may want to know how all this is glued together. You can see it very clearly by clicking on this link in your Web browser. That's the XML file for my outline. The users list is also an XML file.

Radio UserLand is first and foremost an outliner that has an open architecture for node types. That's how all the seams are made to disappear for the user.
