In progress: myWeblogOutliner Tool

Posted by Dave Winer, 6/4/02 at 12:13:50 PM.

In progress.

A brain puzzle for Dave

This has been one of the biggest brain puzzles I've been playing with since shipping Radio 8 on 1/11/02. The browser interface for blogging is very important, it's the standard way to do it, but there are lots of advantages to editing in a "chunky" writing tool, that is, an outliner. Giving it a little time to sink in is the only way to approach such puzzles. Now I think enough time has passed and it's time to try an experiment with the community.

Who this is for

1. People who like to write using an outliner.

2. People with a Radio UserLand weblog. The weblog outliner can also work with Moveable Type, but configuration is such a mess, I want to do this one step at a time. So for now, only people with Radio weblogs.

3. People with a bit of time to play with something new and experimental.

4. Adam Curry.

How to install and test

1. Download myWeblogOutliner.root into the Tools sub-folder of the Radio UserLand folder.

2. You may have to quit and restart Radio to get it to recognize the new Tool.

3. To create a new weblog post, pull down the Tools menu, choose My Weblog Outliner, and then choose New Weblog Post. Enter a title for the post. An outline window opens. Enter a two-level outline. Each top-level item will appear in bold on your weblog. Choose Save from the File menu. Visit your desktop website home page. You should see the outline in your Previous Posts table. In a few seconds it will upstream. That's it. If this works, the outliner is installed, and you can now write posts using it.

4. Adam, you are the only tester of this right now. Please call me now. You know the number. Thanks.
